Excerpt: Sandra Inez Seifert (born in Taipei, Taiwan) is a beauty queen and an international fashion model of mixed Filipina and German descent. She is a New York-educated nurse from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and was crowned Miss Philippines Earth in San Juan City, Philippines. She represented her country in the Miss Earth , the 9th edition of Miss Earth international pageant, where she was crowned Miss Earth Air (1st Runner-up) on November 22nd, Seifert (also known with the nickname, Schazee) was born on February 1, in Taipei, Taiwan. Seifert's father is of German heritage, and her mother is Filipino. She is the daughter of Zenaida Suravilla of Bacolod City and Harald Seifert of Germany, who are now based in Manila. Seifert took her elementary education in a Montessori and at St. Scholasticas Academy in Bacolod City and high school at Brent International School, Eurocampus - Philippines, an international, co-educational day and boarding school, where she graduated valedictorian, the highest rank among those who graduated during her time. She is a "straight A" student at the City University of New York in the United States of America, where she obtained her healthcare nursing degree. She passed the New York nursing board examination in in the United States. She has 3 younger brothers: Stefan, Michael Alexander, and Mark. Stefan works as a team leader for International Business Machines Corporation Philippines. Michael Alexander is also an international model, who models for Calvin Klein in Hong Kong and Singapore. Mark is the youngest among them. Seifert plays basketball and is also into co Another of Lav Diazs epic-length films of people wandering about in the woods, which appeals to a certain type of self-congratulatorily masochistic film geek (I can hardly exempt myself). That said, its not that it doesnt have its power, just that its rather attenuated if youre not particularly familiar with Filipino history. This is a story set around against the background of the Philippine Revolution, whose leader was Andrés Bonifacio. Most of the characters in this film are connected with the key players and events (such the execution of Dr José Rizal, and the betrayal of Bonifacio by another revolutionary leader), and these are mentioned plenty of times, especially during an opening section set in the city, which features some lengthy dialogues in English and Spanish, but also in the long period of searching that Bonifacios wife Gregoria (Hazel Orencio) undertakes. I gather, too, from some quick Wikipedia research that at least some of the key characters (the ailing political leader Simoun, for example, who is seen for much of the film being carried across the islands by two retainers in the company of his friend) may be drawn from a novel by Rizal, albeit one based in part on the revolutionary actors in this national drama. My point, though, is mostly that this is a film which is densely filled with allusions to Filipino history and literature, and which probably makes most sense on that level. There are occasional flourishes of supernatural mystery (a masked character who appears in the forest), somewhat à la Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, but the real star here is the fabulous monochrome cinematography. The landscape is lush and threatening by turns, and some of the set-pieces are really something. However, my immersion in the world of Lav Diaz, for all that it has many pleasures, does make me greatly appreciate the concision of a good minute film. CREDITS Born PIOLO JOSE NONATO PASCUAL on January 12, to Amelia “Amy” Nonato and Philip (Herzig) Pascual. The youngest of six (four girls and 2 boys), Peejay (his nickname) was considered a “miracle baby”. On or about her sixth month of pregnancy, mom Amelia was told that her unborn child no longer had a heartbeat. A dilation & curettage (D & C) procedure was to be performed but due to low blood count, it was postponed for a couple of weeks. A return to the hospital later resulted not in a D & C but a confirmation that the baby was alive. The baby that was due December 8, was not delivered until January 12, by Dra. Lageras at the ANTY hospital in Manila. Piolo was not only a healthy baby boy, but a baby born with 2 teeth.
