Whenever you hear the Lebanese Basketball officials appointing a Lebanese coach head of the National team, it teams they are running out of money. Ghassan Sarkis was assigned the task of head coach of the Lebanese Basketball National Team after the miserable results Tab Baldwin provided.

Some of you recall how I critisized that guy even before he was appointed and how terrible were our results because of his stupid tactics. [Link]

Back to Coach Sarkis, I never liked him and I think he only became famous because of Hekmeh’s achievements which were due to Elie Mechantaf (Estez el Riyadi) rather than his coaching skills. The positive side of the story is that we won’t have to pay him 100,000$ to screw us up like Baldwin did.

You ask me why I am always pessimistic about our national team, It’s mainly due of 3 issues:

    – The players are never paid and treated like slaves. They have to show up or else be penalized, yet they are barely provided with transportation and training shoes. The federation and ministry of sports are to be blamed here.

    – The coaches are never given time to prepare the team and never signed for 3 to 5 years. We expect miracle workers all the time. Most coaches we got were bad as well so it turned into a nightmare. The federation and ministry of sports are to be blamed here.

    – Lebanese Coaches are paid ridiculous amounts compared to non-Lebanese ones, but at least they are paid something unlike the players. However, and here’s the worst part, our dear federation invests all its money every year to naturalize and pay for a Lebanese-American player and expects him to do wonders. As a result, other players not getting a penny feel insulted and disrespected and don’t give a damn about the team as a whole.

    Lebanese Dream Team

    Posted on Updated on

The Lebanese national basketball team debacle is in full swing, again. Within minutes of appointing head Coach Ghassan Sarkis, team manager Nazih Bawji resigned. He had a different vision and had the right to implement it. Coach Ghassan Sarkis is one of the most accomplished local coaches, but there are other reasons clouding this selection. Reasons ranging from money, politics, and logistics among many others. Let’s forget about those petty Lebanese spats and state the basketball reasons, while taking a look at our potential national team. There are challenges for everyone and expectations are high. Lebanese basketball fans across the region believe they are the top team in Asia. Fans aren’t content with just being there this time around, they expect to make some real noise, as well as advance on Lebanon’s international history. Our legend (Fadi El-Khatib) is in the closing moments of his prime and we finally have a very talented mix of experience and young talent to surround him with.

I haven’t spoken to either Nazih Bawji or Ghassan Sarkis; these are merely basketball assumptions and suggestions.

Why did Nazih quit? Nazih is a great basketball mind, before any of us played basketball, Nazih was shooting sky hooks with Karim Abdul Jabbar. Nazih has always had the humility and patience to tread softly in basketball circles. He knows the obvious weaknesses of the national team, mainly size. He also realizes this fact requires an innovative foreign coach that has run this kind of system, and implements it in a short time frame. We have loads of wing talent and great point guards. We could be very successful if we play small. That makes Bawji look at an ex-D1 US college coach or the Spanish euro coach that was mentioned. Nothing fancy, a coach that could run a match-up zone, or half court traps, or man to man help defense that truly helps the helper and keeps the other team guessin

    History

Al-Hikma in classical Arabic, El-Hekmeh in Lebanese dialect stands for "wisdom", thus also the French alternative name of the club, Sagesse (meaning wisdom in French).

The historical Hekmeh club was founded in Beirut in 1943 under the patronage of the late father Boulos Kik, supported by late Mgr. Jean Maroun, with affiliation to the Collège de la Sagesse of the Maronite Catholic Church, a leading educational institution in Lebanon and the East since 1875, despite the affiliation with the Sagesse College, the club has its own independent administration.

The basketball program was founded in 1992, when the club was headed and financed by media tycoon also widely dubbed as the Godfather of Lebanese basketball, president Antoine Choueiri, he was elected president following the passing of late president Henri El Asmar.

Choueiri wanted a team that will achieve unprecedented success and popularity in a bid to change Lebanese sports history forever and unite all Lebanese behind a successful team that will represent Lebanon and Lebanese basketball in every possible competition on a national and international level.

After the Choueiri takeover in 1992 Hekmeh/Sagesse included on its roster some of the most impactful player
