Nitin Mukesh looks back at his late father Mukesh’s illustrious journey!

On 26 August 1979 singer Mukesh and son Nitin Mukesh sang together at a concert in Detroit in the USA for the first time. Sadly, it also happened to be their last. To Mukesh’s, “Saaya hi apne saath tha, saaya hi apne saath hai…,” Nitin replied…
“Is dil ke aashiyan mein ab
    Unke khayal reh gaye,
Tod ke dil woh chal diye,
    Ham phir akele reh gaye,
    Jaane kahaan gaye woh din…

The song from Mera Naam Joker (1970) became the harbinger of the imminent separation between father and son. Mukesh passed away the next day on August 27 just before another scheduled concert. And when the news of his demise reached India, apart from his family and fans, it also left actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor devastated. “When Jaikishen (the composer formed a team with Shankar), I felt I had lost one arm, when Shailendra (lyricist) passed away I lost another. But when Mukesh passed away meri jaan hi chali gayi (I lost my life). I am the body, my soul was Mukesh,” said Raj Kapoor. “It’s easy to burst into tears even today listening to Papa’s songs. He’s God for me. I remember him with a halo,” says Nitin of dad Mukesh who formed a formidable trinity with singers Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar between the ’50s-’70s.

    BLEAK MEMORIES
Mukesh Chand Mathur, just 16, came to Mumbai from Delhi in 194. A non-matriculate he was self-educated. “Someone who went to a Pashtu school spoke impeccable English,” reveals Nitin adding that’s why his dad was keen the children complete their education despite the financial constraints. “Rita, my elder sister, and I were his older children. We saw his struggle while the other three, Nalini (passed away after two years of Mukesh’s demise), Monish and Namrata were born with a silver spoon,” shares Nitin. “Though Papa was famous after songs Awara hoon

In Hinduism, there is one belief, that the entire universe is in balance and runs smoothly due to the three powerful gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. These three are the knowledge, the beauty and the unknown immense depths of the universe and of existence itself. The flow of energy and life is the result of the breaths of this trio, the trimurti.

The other day I was at the Rolling Stone office for a meeting with the publisher of Rolling Stone India, N Radhakrishnan, and the conversation drifted to a recent article I had written on the use of Raag Bhairavi in Hindi film music and it drifted to other things. He made a remark which I have once discussed with my father as well, which was that Kishore, Rafi and Mukesh all died in their prime. I pointed out to him that not one of them touched the senior number of sixty. These three are undoubtedly the tridev, the trinity for Hindi film music.

So, why do I give them such an audacious title of Trinity. Well, these three have recorded the maximum number of songs between them, they have delivered the maximum number of hits. They have ruled the box office from early 50s to mid 80s between themselves. They are the Federer-Nadal-Djokovich axis of Hindi cinema.

The fascinating thing is that the last of the three greats, Kishore Kumar passed away on September 6th 1987. It’s been over 35 years since Kishore, the maverick genius stepped into a recording studio yet I am sure his recorded voice is playing somewhere in the world at any given moment.

Well, is there someone who can dispute firstly these three names and make a claim on any of the three positions of the triumvirates, claiming even one name to be replaced? I don’t think anyone will dare. Let’s look at the challengers, who stand edged out. Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood, G M Durrani, Shailendra Singh, K L Saigal, Mahinder Kapoor, or those who were prolific after their deaths like Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Ariji Singh are few names that
