List of 8,446 tech sergeant promotion selectees released

The Air Force on Tuesday released the names of 8,446 airmen selected for promotion to technical sergeant — the first E-6s chosen under the new enlisted promotion system.

The average overall score for selectees this year was 427.24. Because this is the first E-6 promotion cycle that has used the new enlisted performance report system, that score cannot be compared to last year's average selectee score of 337.23. The new EPR now has a maximum 250 points, but the old system had a maximum 135 points.

This year's 23.55 percent selection rate is the highest in four years, and suggests the trend in recent years of low promotion rates may be ending. Last year, 17.43 percent of staff sergeants were selected for E-6, and in 2013, the rate was even worse — 15.03 percent.

There were 35,863 staff sergeants eligible for technical sergeant in this promotion cycle.

The average number of years time-in-grade and time-in-service for selectees was 5.08 and 10.16, respectively. That is lower than the average 5.3 years time-in-grade and the average 10.53 years time-in-service last year's selectees had. The Air Force began phasing out the points for time-in-grade and time-in-service this year.

This year's average age of selectees — 30.62 — was slightly lower than last year's average age of 30.92. And the average promotion fitness examination score of 65.97 was also lower than last year's average score of 68.89.

The average specialty knowledge test score dropped from 66.32 last year to 66.17 this year. The decoration score remained essentially unchanged at 6.0.

The average EPR score for selectees was 249.22.

The career fields with the highest cutoff scores — indicating where competition was stiffest — were the 8B100 military training leaders, 3E8X1 explosive ordnance disposal airmen, 3S2X1 education and training airmen, 4R0X1B ultrasound diagnostic imaging airmen and 3N1X1 regional band musicians.
