Renowned French multi-disciplinary artist, performer, illustrator and children&#;s author, Herve Tullet, is a true creative genius. Amongst his many artistic talents, he’s written more than 80 books for children which have been translated into more than 30 languages. Hervé Tullet was born in in Normandy. After studying Fine Arts and Decorative Arts, he worked as an Art Director for ten years. In he produced his first illustrations for the press. In , his first book for children was published by Seuil Jeunesse : Comment Papa a rencontré Maman.

He did not have to wait long for recognition: he received the Prize for Non-Fiction at the Bologne International Book Fair in for Faut Pas Confondre, and his books that prefer the ‘path’ to narration, soon find much acclaim. With the series of books Jeux de…( onwards), with Les Cinq Sens () or L’imaginier (), his work not only includes reading books but also touch and feel books aiming thus at children right from early childhood.

With Moi, C’est Blop, published in , that marks the birth of the chameleon form so emblematic of his work, or Turlututu, in , the strange eye that guides children through a game of question and answers, Hervé Tullet asserts his concept : soliciting the reader to actually integrating them in his work.

Le grand livre du hasard is rewarded The Pitchou Prize for the best work in children’s literature in at the Children’s Book Fair of Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux accompanied by wide international acclaim through translations in 25 languages, exhibitions in Korea in , at the Modern Tate Gallery of London in and a number of workshops in France (Montreuil, Rennes, Roubaix) and abroad (Los Angeles, Istanbul…).

Biography

Tullet was born on June 29, , in Avranches, France.

After studying illustration and visual communication, he worked for about ten years in advertising.

In the early s, he started working as an illustrator for the press. In , his first children's book, Comment papa a rencontré maman was published by Le Seuil. Recognition was not long in coming: he received the Non-Fiction Prize at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in for Faut pas confondre.

Tullet has written over 80 books translated in over 30 languages. His books favor following a path as opposed to a narrative. Tullet also lead workshops bringing together up to several hundred people. Among the space where they were held: Tate Modern, Library of Congress, MOMA and Guggenheim Museum.

Press Here (US , orig published in France as Un livre) is his biggest success. This "interactive book" published in the United-States by Handprint Books/Chronicle Books has sold over 2 million copies throughout the world and has been translated into over 35 languages. It stayed on The New York Times Best Seller list in the Children's Picture Books category for over 4 years.

Tullet lives in New York in the United-States since where he created several exhibitions at the Invisible Dog Art Center and at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.

Comment papa a rencontré maman (How dad met mom), Hachette Jeunesse,

This was Hervé’s first book for kids. At the time it was published, the market for children’s literature was undergoing a profound change. New techniques were being deployed; new qualifications were emerging. Hervé was a freelance illustrator who painted on the side.

There was nothing urgently pushing him toward this work, but it allowed him to add another string to his bow and to get his foot in the door of an appealing sector. His experience as a father, looking for innovative ways to support reading with his kids, led him to this project, which humorously dramatizes a meet-cute through little sketched couplets.

Hervé Tullet: When I was imagining my first book for children, I thought I understood the mechanics of this type of book. A parent reads to the child: The parent has fun, the kid has fun watching their parent have fun. At least that’s what I had experienced with my children and with certain books that I could find at the time.

I wanted to make a book that was funny for both adults and children, but that would remain at a child’s level.
