American mathematician and historian (–)

Howard Gray Funkhouser (April 14, – Dec. ) was an American mathematician, historian and associate professor of mathematics at the Washington and Lee University, and later at the Phillips Exeter Academy, particularly known for his early work on the history of graphical methods.

Biography

Funkhouser was born in Dayton, Virginia to Charles Andrew Funkhouser and Maud Irene Snapp. He obtained his AB in mathematics in from the Washington and Lee University, and his A.M. in mathematics from Columbia University in In he also obtained his PhD from Columbia with the thesis, entitled "Historical development of the graphical representation of statistical data.

Funkhouser started his academic career as instructor at the Virginia Military Institute, instructor at Columbia University, and was Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Washington and Lee University. In June he was appointed instructor in mathematics at the Phillips Exeter Academy. In the s he wrote a series of articles and his thesis on the history of quantitative graphics. This thesis van republished under the same title the same year in the scholarly journal on the history of science Osiris. In he was elected member of the American Mathematical Society.

Funkhouser was married to Louise Thompson and lived with his family in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he died in December

    Brief Biography

    Born in the US in , I grew up in Oklahoma, in the central part of the country. My first university degrees were in physics and my first employment was in metrology. My area of expertise was optics: how to work with light.

    At age 31, I discovered I was more interested in working with people and, in , came to Switzerland to begin my training at the C. G. Jung Institute. I was married in and have a son and two daughters (two of whom now have their own children).

    In I moved to Bern after completing my training in psychotherapy and began seeing clients. I now have over 38 years of helping people get to know themselves better and to work on and through their issues and problems.

    Cognitive neuropsychologist

    Chris Moulin is professor at the Laboratoire de Psychologie et NeuroCognition (LPNC UMR ), Université Grenoble Alpes, and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France.

    Moulin is a cognitive neuropsychologist known for his work in the field of déjà vu which he conducts with his former PhD student Akira O’Connor (who now works at the University of St Andrews). Both psychologists have appeared in BBC radio broadcasts and featured heavily in the popular media in Britain and elsewhere, such as The Guardian, the New York Times Magazine,New Scientist,The Independent and Der Spiegel.

    Moulin completed his PhD ("Does a metacognitive deficit contribute to the episodic memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease?") at Bristol University in under the supervision of Tim Perfect and Alan Baddeley. He then held various Research Fellowships at the Universities of Bristol, Reading and at a Clinical Research Institute at Bath (RICE) and worked in the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds between and In and Moulin organised the BPS Cognitive Section Conference, held in Leeds. He was on the editorial board of the journal Memory.

    Moulin's current research interests focus on neuropsychological impairments of memory. In particular, he is interested in the interaction of executive function and long-term memory. Research themes include metacognition, inhibition, and the sensations of memory (déjà vu). Dr. Moulin has been involved in researching recollective confabulation, which was originally described as 'déjà vécu' (a term originally used by Arthur Funkhouser). Recollective confabulation is a rare disorder of recognition memory whereby the person feels that most events in daily life are repetitions of things which have happened before, something often described by carers and h
