Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga, OL (LAY-ə sa-LONG-ə; born February 22, ) is a Filipino singer and actress. Known primarily for her work in theatre, she has starred in musicals on Broadway and in the West End. Her accolades include a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, in addition to nominations for two Grammy Awards. She was conferred with the Presidential Medal of Merit in and the Order of Lakandula in , and she was honored as a Disney Legend in

Salonga began her career as a child in Philippine musical theatre productions and rose to international recognition in for playing the lead role of Kim in the original West End and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon. For her performance, she gained five awards—the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Theatre World Award, and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Her further roles include Éponine in the Broadway and West End productions of Les Misérables, Wu Mei-Li in the Broadway revival of Flower Drum Song, Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables, Kei Kimura in the original Broadway production of Allegiance, Erzulie in the Broadway revival of Once on This Island, and Aurora Aquino in the original Broadway production of Here Lies Love. In and , she starred in the West End production of the musical revue Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends.

As a recording artist, Salonga began her music career at age ten. Her first album, Small Voice, was launched in and received a gold certification. Rivermaya&#;s roots came from a band named Xaga consisting of Jesse Gonzales on vocals, Kenneth Ilagan on guitars, Nathan Azarcon on bass guitar, Rome Velayo on drums, and Rico Blanco on keyboards and backing vocals. The band was managed by Lizza Nakpil and director Chito S. Roño. In the process of grueling practice sessions, Ilagan was replaced with Perf de Castro; Azarcon&#;s childhood friend, Mark Escueta, to replace Velayo, as well as former classmate Mañalac to replace Gonzales. With Mañalac as frontman, the band members themselves decided to disband Xaga and form the band Rivermaya. They started putting together original songs like &#;Ulan&#;, &#;&#;, and &#;Awit ng Kabataan&#; in demo form for prospective recording companies. Since its formation, the band has launched several successful albums, received numerous awards, and has undertaken several successful concerts and tours.

After the band&#;s successful US and Canada tours, Mañalac decided to leave the band and stay in the United e of the popular belief and rumors saying that he was removed from the group due to drug addiction, Mañalac dismissed this as a mere &#;fan theory&#; claiming that he doesn&#;t even smoke. He actually went back to school in San Francisco and Los Angeles and took up English, Philosophy and Film which was his major.

In , after living in Los Angeles following the Rivermaya tour in America, Mañalac returned to the Philippines. His former bandmate in Rivermaya, Nathan Azarcon, introduced him to Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado. Later all of them joined together and formed the then, the band had launched four successful albums, and received numerous awards.

The Voice of the Philippines is a Philippine television reality singing competition that aired on ABS-CBN, and is based on the Dutch television series The Voice of Holland. The show premiered on June 15, and was hosted by Toni Gonzaga and Robi Domingo.Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo Mañalac, Lea Salonga, and serve as the four coaches and the judging panel of the show.

The show had aired two seasons and had produced two winners: Mitoy Yonting and Jason Dy.

It is the fourth national franchise in the Southeast Asian region after Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Overview

The series is part of The Voice franchise and is based on a similar competition format in the Netherlands entitled The Voice of Holland.

Format

The Voice is a reality television series that started from a format originating from the Netherlands named "The Voice of Holland". The whole format features four coaches or judges searching for a batch of talented new artists, who could become the Philippines' new singing superstar. The show's concept is indicated by its title: The four coaches will only judge a singer hopeful termed by the show as "Artist" with only his or her vocal talent without prejudice to his/her physical bearing.

It is this concept that makes The Voice franchise rise above other known reality talent searches which airs in any known media platform such as The X Factor franchise, the Got Talent franchise or even the Idol franchise. The a
