One year after, LIB remembers late music legend, OJB Jezreel
Before his death, OJB and his team were happy, optimistic and putting finishing touches to plans for his 50th birthday. OJB however suffered a terrible relapse of his kidney ailment which ultimately led to his demise on June 14, 2016.
The respected music producer and singer battled with kidney problems since 2013. He was consequently was flown to India for a transplant. After the successful surgery, OJB Jezreel thanked his first wife, Mama J for being there for him and donating one of her kidneys to save his life.
He was buried on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Ikoyi cemetery. The funeral service held at RCCG, Grace Chapel at Ogunlana Drive, Surulere before his body was moved to Ikoyi cemetery where he was buried in the same spot where his mother was buried 14 years earlier.
He is survived by three wives and eight children.
As the entertainment industry remembers him one year after his demise, his legacy as a legendary music producer who launched the careers of countless A-list music stars including Paul Play, Ruggedman, X-Appeal, Jazzman, 2face Idibia, and many others remains indelible.

Nigeria mourns loss of producer OJB Jezreel
He is said to have died from complications related to kidney failure in the morning of Tuesday 14 June. He was 49 and a month away from his 50th birthday. His death comes three months after his friend, the late musician Nomoreloss passed on.
Members of the Nigerian music industry have taken to social media to share their grief at the news. Afropolitan Vibes co-organiser Abby Ogunsanya wrote: “I guess Nomoreloss called for his friend.”
Producer K-Solo tweeted: “Learned OJB passed on. Just left this sinful world,” adding that he was “trying to get to the family”.
In 2013, news of the producer having renal failure made the round and was confirmed by his colleagues in the music industry. A special account was created for individuals wishing to contribute to saving the producer’s life. His friend, Nomoreloss, was one of the artist who alerted the public. He later said that “people have been responding to the call for donations and we are grateful for those that have even found time to at least visit despite their busy schedules.”
Yemi Alade, DJ Jimmy Jatt and Vector were some of the persons who visited the ailing producer. MI Abagaalluded to this in a song: "Somebody help me tell Mr. Nomoreloss/ When OJB was sick, it was hurting all of us..."
OJB gave an interview, saying, “God willing, I have like eight to ten weeks more to get the transplant done. It’s strange, I still walk around a little. I can’t eat much though. I trust God and Nigerians for their financial support.”
He would get that financial support and recover fully. However, in 2015, rumour had it that he had relapsed and had to be hospitalised. Early life
Babatunde Okungbowa a.k.a. OJB Jezreel was born on July 4, 1966, in Lagos to Chief Anthony Okungbowa and Isabella Abiodun Okungbowa (nee Pinheiro) in a matrimony that produced 5 others. He was the last child of his mother.
He attended Yewande Memorial Primary School and Mainland Preparatory Elementary School between 1972–1977.
He graduated from Federal Government College, Ijanikin in 1986 where he organized a music concert while he was a student of the school.
OJB furthered his education at Lagos College of Education and Liter-way College, Holland, Year 1987-1990. However, in true pursuit of his passion and a real career, he decided to follow his path in life as an artiste/music producer.
For the prolific producer, music started back in 1986. The artiste started making beats in back room studios, first in his Surulere neighbourhood and later in other parts of the city.
His first son Ayokunle Okungbowa is the rising gospel artist also known as Ayo Jezreel.
