The school rivalry between Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University began when both educational institutions participated in the Philippine National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and has carried over to the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) where both universities compete in currently.
Beginning with UAAP Season 84 in May 2022, Ateneo de Manila University decided to unify student-athletes and varsity teams under the "Blue Eagles" moniker moving forward, regardless of sport, gender, or age group. Meanwhile, the Green Archer is the traditional mascot of De La Salle University and the varsity teams are collectively referred to as the "Green Archers", however, each team carries a specific moniker that references the sport that they play.
Ateneo and La Salle were both co-founders of the NCAA in 1924, until Ateneo left the league in 1978 to join the UAAP while La Salle announced its decision to leave the NCAA in September 1980. Both Catholic private schools in the Metro Manila area have been competing against each other in the UAAP ever since La Salle was also admitted to join the league in 1986.
History
The rivalry began in 1939 when Ateneo lost to La Salle in a hotly contested championship basketball game in NCAA Season 16 (1939–40). Basketball games between Ateneo and La Salle in the old NCAA were always hard-fought, but they were not yet tagged by local sportswriters as a recognized rivalry. The more popular collegiate sports rivalries in the NCAA were Ateneo versus San Beda and La Salle versus Letran.
When Ateneo and La Salle transferred to the UAAP in 1978 and 1986 respectively, they naturally contin
Ahomiro gets to play on new volley ruling
THE Premier Volleyball League has recently amended its rule on permanent foreign residents, paving the way for former Ateneo star Amy Ahomiro to see action for the Perlas Lady Spikers in the PVL Open Conference starting this Saturday.
Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision, said the league will still allow players with Alien Certificate of Residence to see action in the upcoming tournament provided they have been residents for at least 10 years.
Ahomiro studied high school at Brent School before suiting up for the Lady Eagles where she was part of their two UAAP champion teams.
“Our next conference is an Open Conference, not All-Filipino,” said Palou. “This is so because we will allow foreign nationals who are residents of the Phl and holders of an ACR to play in our league.
“However, we have put a restriction as only foreign residents and ACR holders for 10 continuous years will be allowed to play in Open Conference,” he added.
The rule change, however, would bar Pachari Sangmuang from suiting up for the Power Smashers. The Thai power hitter has an ACR but she has been a resident here for just the last three years.
“Yes, Kiwi (Ahomiro) will play this conference,” said Charo Soriano, one of the Perlas managers and co-founder of Beach Volleyball Republic.
Ahomiro will thus re-join a talented crew of former State U standouts Kat Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon, Ateneo libero Gizelle Tan, Ella de Jesus, Jam Ferrer, Suzanne Roces, Mae Tajima and Ryssabel Devanadera.
Perlas, however, will miss seasoned attacker Dzi Gervacio, who has taken a leave of absence to study in the US.
Perlas clashes Air Force in the main game of the two-match opener at 6:30 p.m. with Creamline battling Adamson-Akari at 4 p.m. at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The other participating teams are Hapee Toothpaste, BaliPure, Power Smashers and defending champion Pocari Sweat.
Ahomiro on Valdez’s performance: ‘I thought she had 50’
Just when the Lady Eagles looked dead in the water, three-time MVP Alyssa Valdez mustered a game of a lifetime.
She scored a season-best 34 points en route to forcing a winner-take-all Game Three for the UAAP Women’s Volleyball title on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Having been teammates with Valdez for the past five years, Amy Ahomiro was not surprised Valdez had 34 points. She though was surprised that Valdez’s final line was not more.
“I thought she had 50,” Kiwi told reporters after the match. “She’s MJ (Michael Jordan).”
Valdez had never failed the Lady Eagles in do-or-die to situations. For the last three seasons, the Lady Eagles are spotless in elimination matches.“She turned up in the third, fourth, and fifth set which I’m not really surprised – it’s Alyssa that’s why she’s the Phenom. I’m just glad she’s on my team and I’m not playing against her,” Ahmiro gushed about her batchmate. “She’s always like that but today we really needed her and she stepped up – she did her job and she went beyond doing her job.”
Ahomiro, however, knows they can’t rely on Valdez solely to finish off the Lady Spikers on Saturday in saying that a strong start would be a great help.
“They (La Salle) came out really strong. Siguro, they had momentum and confidence from the last game – they beat us in three sets. Like I keep saying, we just need to be confident and play as a team and I think it only came out late in the match,” Ahomiro said. “I think the momentum is with is now. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing as a team. Hopefully, we’ll work and we’ll be champs again.”
Like Valdez, Kiwi will be playing her last match for Ateneo. She wants to focus on te match and keep her mind away from List of Ateneo de Manila University alumni
