Brazilian Catholic organization dedicated to the Latin Mass

The Personal Apostolic Administration of Saint John Mary Vianney (Latin: Administratio Apostolica Personalis Sancti Ioannis Mariae Vianney) was established on 18 January by Pope John Paul II for traditionalist Catholic clergy and laity within the Diocese of Campos in Brazil. It is the only personal apostolic administration in existence, and the only canonically regular Catholic Church jurisdiction devoted exclusively to celebrating the Tridentine Mass in the area. Its current Apostolic Administrator is Bishop Fernando Arêas Rifan.

    Origins

From 3 January to 29 August , the Diocese of Campos was headed by Bishop Antônio de Castro Mayer, who opposed the use there of Pope Paul VI's revision of the Roman Missal and held to the Tridentine Mass. After his resignation, the then year-old Bishop Castro Mayer continued to lead opposition in the diocese to the revised liturgy and on 30 June joined with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in consecrating as bishops, against an express prohibition by Pope John Paul II, four priests of the Society of St. Pius X. For this action he was declared to have incurred excommunication.

The priests of Campos who shared his traditionalist Catholic views formed themselves into the Priestly Union of Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, also known as the Sacerdotal Society of St. John Marie Vianney (SSJV) and, when Bishop de Castro Mayer died in April , chose as his successor Licínio Rangel, who was given episcopal consecration later that year by three bishops of the Society of St. Pius X.

    Reconciliation with the Holy See

Together with the Society of Saint Pius X, the Campos group of priests made a pilgrimage to Rome during the Jubilee Year and was welcomed by Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, with a lunch and dialogue. They decided to seek reconciliation wit

St. John Vianney, Priests, and God’s Armor

    &#;When people want to destroy religion they begin by attacking the priest; for when there is no priest, there is no sacrifice: and when there is no sacrifice, there is no religion.&#;

    — St. John Vianney

St. John Vianney exemplifies a life of sacrificial love, holy boldness and courageous perseverance. His example is absolutely relevant to our day and age. Twenty years ago on pilgrimage to Catholic shrines in France, our group visited the famous village of Ars. Our priest celebrated holy Mass in the same crypt that St. John Vianney offered Mass for his flock. That experience was marked with many extraordinary graces for everyone in our small group. After Mass we visited the cell where the Curé of Ars lived—a simple room with a single bed, a crucifix, a small table with a candle, and walls stained by smoke from the fiery ordeals that occurred there—battles between the priest and the evil one.

Ironically, the man who was not an intellectual genius models the genius of authentic masculinity: protector of what is good and vulnerable to demonic attack. He valiantly fought the good fight when he courageously persevered in the call to priesthood. That journey was particularly challenging and humbling for him. Having been ordained and sent to Ars, he had a different kind of battle. He found an entire village of people gone astray from God and he was sent to change that. He did as Saint Paul instructs, “Put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6). He was already a man in love with God, well prepared by the cross of Christ. He turned to God in prayer first. St. Vianney’s teaching on the primacy of prayer ties into Paul’s teaching on the armor of God, “With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit” (Ephesians ).

Prayer is the source of all graces, the mother of all virtues, the efficacious and universal way by which God wills that we should come to him. He says to us: “Ask, and you shall receive.

  • Why St. John Vianney is a Model for all Priests

He was also well known for his dedication to the sacrament of penance. He would make himself available for confession for up to 16 hours daily.

In his encyclical, Pope John XXIII called St. John Vianney a model of priestly holiness.

“[The priest] is no longer supposed to live for himself … He must be aflame with charity toward everyone. Not even his thoughts, his will, his feelings belong to him, for they are rather those of Jesus Christ who is his life,” he wrote, quoting a sermon from Pope Pius XII.

“St. John Mary Vianney is a person who attracts and practically pushes all of us to these heights of the priestly life,” John XXIII further added.

The pope highlighted the three evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, which he said Vianney exemplified.

“His example in the various works of priestly asceticism still points out the safest path to follow, and in the midst of this example, his poverty, chastity, and obedience stand forth in a brilliant light,” the pope said of Vianney.

“What great benefits are conferred on human society by men like this who are free of the cares of the world and totally dedicated to the divine ministry so that they can employ their lives, thoughts, powers in the interest of their brethren!”

Pope John XXIII said Vianney, who was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, clearly lived a life of poverty. He noted the saint’s heavy mortifications — restraining himself from food, sleep, and other personal belongings.

“This detachment from external goods enabled him to offer the most devoted and touching care to the poor,” the pope said.

“He passed a life that was almost completely detached from the changeable, perishable goods of this world, and his spirit was free and unencumbered by impediments of this kind, so that it could always lie open to those who suffered from any kind of misery.”
