Peter Hinwood is a retired English actor and model. Most recently, he was an antique dealer. Hinwood became famous for playing Rocky Horror (A Creation) in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Biography

Born on May 17, 1946 in Bromley, Surrey, Kent as Peter Wylie Hinwood, Hinwood became a model at English Boy Ltd. while living in Chelsea in 1967. At 6’ 1” and working out 3 times a week, his muscular physique helped him become an in-demand male model, making 5,000 pounds a year (about $8 to $12 thousand dollars).

Surprised to receive the role, Hinwood won the part of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s Creation in The Rocky Horror Picture Show after being cajoled into auditioning by a friend, miming to a Bryan Ferry record at the King's Road Theatre. Hinwood had a hard time with the singing, and subsequently, his voice was dubbed (mostly) by Trevor White in the film and on the soundtrack album. He had few film roles, though continued modeling through the late 1970s. In 1976, Hinwood had a small part in the film Sebastiane, along with Rocky Horror cast-mates Nell Campbell and Patricia Quinn.

Never comfortable with acting, Hinwood retired from the limelight in and formed an antique business, Peter Hinwood Limited, in September of 1978. He is now a successful antique shop owner and art dealer. In the late 1990s, his gallery appeared in House & Garden magazine, illustrated with a number of Islamic artworks, as well as a very large plasterwork figured relief from Elizabethan England.

His most notable antique sale came in 1991, when he sold his gold-dyed kid-leather briefs from Rocky Horror at auction for $1,000 to the Orlando Hard Rock Hotel.

Peter Hinwood was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, October 18, 1827, of German parentage.  His father died in 1829 and in 1840 he came with his mother to Steuben County, where he grew to manhood.  He was early inured to the hardships of pioneer life, with no means but a pair of strong arms and a natural energy and determination to make a successful issue of life.  From a heavily timbered track of land he improved and made one of the best farms in the county.  Where log cabins once stood he has lived to see erected beautiful residences, and from a few log houses the growth of the county seat of Steuben County.  Mr. Hinwood was married November 15, 1851 to Elizabeth Kellogg.  To them were born three children -- George, a druggist in Washington Territory; Sylvester, deceased; and Bell, wife of Charles Buckland, in the government printing offices of Washington D.C.  Mrs. Hinwood died November 2, 1859.  Mr. Hinwood afterward married Mary Kamkamp, a native of Germany, born May 4, 1838, a daughter of John and Margaret (Hussman) Kamkamp, who came to America in 1845, and located in Steuben County.  They have had five children -- Atta, wife of R.E. Carpenter; Frank (deceased), Lena, Lola (deceased), and Ernest. Mr. and Mrs. Hinwood are members of the Christian Church.  In politics he is a strong Republican. He has served several years on the Angola City Board.

Peter Hinwood was born May 17, 1946, and worked as both a photographer and a professional model while he was pursuing his acting career. Hinwood is most noted for his film appearance as the well-oiled and mostly mute title character in the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. While the body was his, the part of Rocky's singing voice was played by Trevor White.

His portrayal of Dr. Frank-n-furter's "creation" was the most significant role of Hinwood's limited acting career. Hinwood had previously played the Greek god Hermes in the Adventures of Ulysses mini-series on British television in the late sixties. He performed in one other horror film before Rocky Horror, as "Guy" in Roddy McDowall's macabre Tam Lin. After Rocky Horror, he capped his cinematic career with a bit role in Paul Humfress and Derek Jarman's homoerotic Roman historical drama, Sebastiane.

He reportedly went on to become an antiques dealer outside of London.

    Biography

Hinwood worked as both a photographer and a professional model while he was pursuing his acting career. Hinwood is mostly noted for his film appearance as the well-oiled, muscular and mostly mute creation Rocky in the 1975 cult movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rocky's singing voice was dubbed in post-production by Australian singer Trevor White. Both Hinwood and White were interviewed by Scott Michaels for his 2002 book Rocky Horror: From Concept to Cult.

His portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter's "creation" was the most significant role of Hinwood's acting career. Hinwood had played the Greek god Hermes in the Adventures of Ulysses mini-series on British television in the late 1960s. Before Rocky Horror, he performed as Guy in Roddy McDowall's macabre Tam Lin. After Rocky Horror, he also had a bit role in Paul Humfress and Derek Jarman's homoerotic Roman historical drama Sebastiane.

Hinwood is now an antiques dealer in London and lives most of the time in Tangier. He told People magazine in 2000 that there were three reasons why he chose not to continue to milk his Horror moment. "One, I can't act. Two, I cringe with embarrassment every time I see myself on film. Three, I relish a quiet, peaceful life." Hinwood revealed that in 1994 he had rediscovered the gold hot pants he wore in the film and sold them through an auction house for nearly US$1,000. They are now part of the Hard Rock memorabilia collection and were for a time displayed in its restaurant in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, United States. The shorts can be viewed at the Orlando Hard Rock in Florida.
