Britney Jean Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American singer. Often referred to as the "Princess of Pop", Spears has sold over 150 million records worldwide, making her one of the world's best-selling music artists. An influential figure in popular music, she is credited with the revival of teen pop during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

After appearing in the television shows Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club, Spears signed with Jive Records in 1997 at age fifteen. The pop princess was born on Dec. 2, 1981, in McComb, Miss., to Jamie and Lynne Spears, whom she described in the book as, respectively, a raging alcoholic and a mother “gushing” with blood after giving birth. She has two siblings, older brother Bryan Spears and younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears, of “Zoey 101” and competing-memoir fame.

Spears said her song and dance talents gave her a way to express her voice in a home where it was suppressed: “I worked hard to make things look the way I wanted to,” she writes of being an 8-year-old directing her own imaginary music videos. “Nobody in my town seemed to be doing stuff like that. But I knew I wanted to see it in the world, and I tried to make it so.”

Pop star Britney Spears released her long-awaited memoir The Woman in Me on October 24, and the singer offered more surprising details about her conservatorship and romantic relationships—including with former *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake.

In addition to an previously released excerpt in which Spears wrote she became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby and had an abortion, the book also contains sections detailing their alleged infidelity and eventual breakup in 2002, which Spears says happened via text message. “For as much as Justin hurt me, there was a huge foundation of love, and when he left me, I was devastated,” Spears writes. “When I say devastated, I mean I could barely speak for months. Whenever anyone asked me about him, all I could I do is cry.”

The Woman in Me is a memoir by American singer Britney Spears. It was published on October 24, 2023, by Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. The book was released in 26 languages. Michelle Williams narrates the audiobook.

The Woman in Me received praise from critics. Within a week of its release in the United States, the book became a #1 New York Times best-seller, selling 1.1 million copies in all formats. As of January 2024, it has sold over two million copies in the US with an estimated three million copies in print globally. A film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Marc Platt is currently in the works at Universal Pictures as of 2024.

Background and release

On February 21, 2022, it was reported that Spears signed a $15 million book deal for her then-upcoming memoir, one of the biggest book deals of all time, three months after a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge formally ended her conservatorship. On July 11, 2023, Spears announced that the book would be titled The Woman in Me, and would be released on October 24, 2023. The title is a reference to a lyric in her song "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" (2001), where she sings "I'm just trying to find the woman in me". It was reportedly ghostwritten together with journalist Sam Lansky.

The book contains 288 pages comprising 49 chapters, and was released in 26 languages. The memoir was released in audiobook format simultaneously with the other editions.
