    SOMETHING HORRIBLE happened at our local Stripes convenience store: I gave the Gospel to three teens.

    One of the teens went home and told his mom that I said he was going to Hell. This is something I rarely say, and I didn&#;t say to these teens. % of the time I ask this question: &#;If you died today, would you go to Heaven or Hell?&#;

    Here is a similar conversation I had with a gaggle of giggling girls a few years back:

    Well, the mom got mad and posted my name on Facebook saying that I told her son that he was going to Hell,  among other untrue things. Locals in our small town read the post and made all sorts of false accusations against me. Here&#;s a sample:

    &#;He told me the same thing, too.&#;

    &#;He doesn&#;t like gays.&#;

    &#;He hangs out at the high school three or four times a week and evangelizes.&#;

    &#;He scolded me for wearing my cheerleader outfit, saying that men will lust after me.&#;

  • Cherry picking

    “”If anyone lists a dozen defeats in which the losing side attacked with divided columns, I can list a dozen victories in which that very tactic was employed.
    Original&#;in German:
    Wer uns ein Dutzend verlorene Schlachten nennt, in welchen der Geschlagene in getrennten Kolonnen angriff, dem können wir ein Dutzend gewonnene nennen, wo eben diese Ordnung gebraucht wurde.
    —Carl von Clausewitz, On War, Book Two, Chapter VI

    Cherry picking, used figuratively, refers to selective presentation of examples or data which support an argument while ignoring those that do not. It derives from the obvious reluctance to harvest unripe, or overripe, fruit and to select only those which will make profit (or pie).

    Often, cherry-picked data will be over-extrapolated and oversold to give the false impression that they are representative. The practice is more a deliberate act of deception than a fallacy, but nevertheless an extremely common rhetorical tactic.

    Much of cherry picking is anecdotal evidence, using just one or two examples to make a point; statistical cherry-picking essentially uses larger-scale anecdotes, ignoring the full range of evidence on the relevant issue.

    Explanation

    In arguing for a position, a person cherry-picks by (deliberately) omitting important evidence that would hurt their own case.

    In the case of debating creationism vs. evolution, a common suppressed-evidence argument would be "Evolution is racist". This is obviously ignoring the evidence that many (in fact most) racist groups who have existed i

  • How Did John Become About &#;Weirdos and Violence&#;?

    Here's a name for you: Rollen Stewart. Born Feb. 19, Ring a bell? You probably know who he is, you just don't know his name, although it's not like you're gonna run into the guy at Starbucks or anything since he's serving three consecutive life sentences on kidnapping charges in a California penitentiary. His other claims to fame include being married four times, being jailed by Moscow police at the Summer Olympics, and stink bombing Trinity Broadcasting Network. And most recently Rollen Stewart is known for coming in #1 for most common response on my Facebook wall when I posted the question, When you hear or read the words "John ," what does it make you think or feel or remember? You see, Rollen Stewart is the wacky rainbow wig guy who is famous for holding up "John " signs at big sporting events. And while I don't have the data to back up this claim, I'm willing to bet that his antics didn't win a whole lot of so-called unbelievers over to Jesus.

    "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."

    Here's the thing: I got 47 answers to my question, What does the term "John " make you think about? And while a lot of folks answered, "rainbow wig guy at football games," what was more heartbreaking than that is how many negative reactions people have to this verse. Here's a sample:

    "John is a message of exclusion -- as in we are the ones who will be saved -- clearly not you"

    "The way some Christians talk, God has it out for the world"

    "this verse is thrown in people's face in a violent-feeling manner; as if aggression will get someone to believe"

    My friend Brad simply said that John makes him think of "weirdos and violence." Wierdos and violence. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. What have we done?

    As this season o
