Everyone wants to know “who’s the Pongal winner? Thunivu or Varisu?” Well, I have the answer for you. Both films are winners. Ajith and Vijay, H. Vinoth and Vamshi Paidipally, Boney Kapoor and Dil Raju, are all winners. They’ve delivered mediocre films knowing fully well that the fans will not let their screen idols down. Thunivu won and so did Varisu. Thunivu sucked and so did Varisu.
Thunivu is a film about a bank robbery that’s so conveniently put together, you’d assume that even if the Indian Government decided to nuke the bank, our protagonist would’ve found a way to save himself. Thunivu is about a bank robbery but its writer-director H. Vinoth commits a robbery of his own: the robbery of your time and patience.
If you’ve seen Sathuranga Vettai and Theeran: Adhigaaram Ondru, then you’re definitely a fan of H. Vinoth. However, the three films he has made after that (all of them featuring Ajith) have been below-average. First was the Pink remake (Nerkonda Paarvai) which even Ajith’s hardcore fans found difficult to follow. Ajith fans chanted “no means no” after watching Nerkonda Paarvai but most of them couldn’t seem to grasp the film’s key messaging. Instead of simplifying the concept, H. Vinoth made it cryptic for the layperson to understand.
After Nerkonda Paarvai came 2022’s Valimai, a long-overdue tearjerker that tested this critic’s patience. Valimai left a scar in my brain especially with the one-liner “Amma saaptu aaru naal aachu.” It’s perhaps the greatest line in Tamil Cinema of this century and I’ll never forget till the day I die. Thunivu promised something better. The trailer, while not really put together well, was interesting when compared to that of the other Po English actress and model (born 1992) For the American judge, see Amy Berman Jackson.
