Dhaka: A prominent Bangladeshi journalist Munni Saha was surrounded by a angry mob and briefly held hostage in the capital city's Karwan Bazar area and was acused of being an 'Indian agent' on Saturday.

The incident unfolded as Saha who a well-known TV journalist was leaving a media office when she was accused of being an Indian agent and a supporter of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina .

The group of protesters intercepted Saha’s vehicle and began abusive accusations at her.

The mob’s hostility was linked to the ongoing political unrest following the removal of Hasina’s government from power in August, during which she was oustered after a popular uprising following a massive students protest.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police swiftly intervened and resuced her from the mob and took her to Tejgaon Police Station. There, she was reportedly held for some time before being transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) office. This led to widespread speculation that she had been arrested.

However, the police clarified early Sunday morning that Saha was not formally detained. They explained that she had been taken to the DB office for her safety due to the crowd's aggressive behavior.

A police official confirmed to a local Bangladeshi newspaper that Saha had suffered a panic attack during the ordeal but was later released after receiving medical attention.

"Police did not detain Munni Saha. She was surrounded by a group of people at Kawran Bazar outside her office. Later, Tejgaon police took her to the DB office for security reasons," the official stated.

The incident is one such example of growing challenges faced by journalists in Bangladesh particularly in the wake of Hasina's fall from power. The caretaker government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has canceled the accreditation of numerous journalists and launch

The mob accused Saha of involvement in the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles mutinyand student deaths. “You are doing everything to make this country a part of India. The blood of students is on your hands,” one person shouted. Saha responded, “How have I harmed? This is also my country.”

DB Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed Saha’s arrest around 9:30 pm. He said she faces multiple cases in Dhaka. The exact jurisdiction of her arrest is yet to be determined. Saha was previously charged with crimes against humanityafter the fall of the Sheikh Hasina administration.

Meanwhile, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Kolkata reported the arrests of two more monks and the secretary of Chinmoy Krishna Das. Radharaman Das, ISKCON Kolkata Vice President, told Times Now Network the monks were arrested while leaving a jail after delivering medicine to Chinmoy Krishna Das. He expressed concern about the monks' access to legal representation. “We saw those lawyers in Bangladesh [who] advocated for Chinmoy Prabhu Das have been slapped [with] cases. Some of them were beaten up. Amid such [a] situation who will come for these innocent monks?” he said.

  • Journalist Munni Saha released on condition

Police have released journalist Munni Saha after detaining her following a confrontation with a mob outside her office in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar.

Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch said they did not arrest her ‘on their own’ and freed her under Section 497 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, or CrPC, on the ‘condition of appearing before court’ in connection with the cases against her.

A group of people cordoned Munni off after she had left the office of ‘Ek Takar Khobor', her current workplace, in Karwan Bazar around 9:30pm on Saturday.

Police immediately arrived at the scene after the incident was reported to them amid the tension and took her into custody afterwards.

Citing four cases against her, Tejgaon Police Station chief Mobarak Hossain then said Munni was taken to the DB office in the capital’s Minto Road.

Announcing her release four hours after the incident, Mallik said: “She was terrified after being surrounded by the crowd in Karwan Bazar and as she is a woman, police rescued her from there and took her to Tejgaon Police Station. She was later taken to the DB office."

“We are releasing her under the family’s care on the condition that she appears before court in the four cases against her under Section 497 of the CrPC."

Section 497 of the CrPC allows the release on bail of any person by the police for a non-bailable offence. It is not the legal right of an accused to get bail in a non-bailable offence under this section; rather it is the discretionary power of the court to grant bail in a non-bailable offence.

When it was decided to release Munni under this section, the chiefs of the police stations where there are cases against her came and handed her over to her family after completing the ‘necessary procedures’.
