    Royal Media Services (RMS) owner SK Macharia on Friday lost one of his sons, John Macharia, in a tragic road crash along the Southern bypass.

    John was a business entrepreneur much like his father and is credited with having founded a number of insurance companies in the country.

    He was the Executive Director of Kenya's leading public service vehicles underwriters, Direct Line Assurance Limited.

    According to the underwriter's website, John had over 20 years of experience in the financial services sector in addition to having started other companies in a similar line of business.

    "A seasoned entrepreneur, Mr Macharia is credited with introducing insurance premium financing in Kenya having founded and run Triple A Capital Limited.

    "Mr Macharia is an Executive Director at Harbour Capital with over 20 years experience in the financial services sector," his company profile read in part.

    Triple A is a financial institution that works together with other entities including public institutions to facilitate operations such as the acquisition of European Union (EU) funding, for example, the euro bond.

    He holds a degree in Economics and Computer Science from Trent University Ontario Canada.

    In 2016, John bumped into a Prado while driving his Porsche saloon car around Museum Hill, Nairobi where he escaped unhurt. 

    Police arrested the media mogul's son on drunk driving charges and was later released along with his impounded vehicle.

    At the time, he was alone in the car, however, in the Thursday night crash he was said to have been with a female passenger in the car who escaped with minor injuries.

    Media mogul and billionaire Samuel Kamau Macharia (S.K Macharia) is in court seeking orders to become his grandson’s guardian, to take over the management of the seventeen-year old’s multi-million inheritance.

    At stake is a Sh389 million life insurance, a pension payout whose beneficiary is the grandson, Adam Kamau Macharia as per the deceased father’s wish, and a multi-million estate left behind by S.K’s late son John Gichia Macharia who according to court documents had no relationship with the tycoon at the time of his death.

    SK, who owns Royal Media Services (RMS), in the originating summons, asks the court to appoint him as guardian to Adam Kamau Gichia jointly with his mother Lisa Anyango Amenya, and appoint him solely as the guardian of the estate of his grandson.

    Under Section 38 of the Law of Succession Act, the said Adam Kamau Gichia is the heir of his late father’s property which include 600,000 shares in AKM Investments Ltd that owns Kyuna estate L.R No. 209/7799, Mugumo Estate L.R. No. 7752/258, Kibarage estate L.R No 7752/258, 3.7 million shares in DirectLine Assurance Limited, 500 shares in Serenity Media Productions, 350 shares in Big Five Conservancy Limited, 500 shares in Bushfire Media Distributors, as well as shares in Big Five Lotto, Toi Development Limited and Harbour Capital Limited.

    John, who was the director and founder of the Triple A Finance, also owned three expensive Harley Davidson motorbikes, and had five bank accounts at Diamond Trust Bank, and three at Equity Bank.

    Samuel Kamau Macharia (born in 1942), also known as SK Macharia, is the founder and chairman of Royal Media Services, one of Kenya's largest private radio and television networks. Royal Media Services' flagship outlets are Citizen TV and Radio Citizen. In 2012, Macharia was on the Forbes Top 10 List of African Millionaires to Watch. He was on The Africa Report's 2013 list of the 50 most influential Africans. He was also honoured with the 2015 Eastern Africa Ernst and Young Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award.

    Early life

    Samuel Kamau Macharia was born in 1942 in Ndakaini Village, Murang’a County, Kenya. He is the second of four children, who were squatters working on British settler plantations under the colonial government. The family subsequently moved to Embu, Kenya.

    Education

    In 1988, Macharia was enrolled in Standard 1 (first class or year of primary school) at Wango Boarding Primary School. He later attended Karaba Secondary School from 1996 where he took the Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) Examination. Macharia began his studies at Embu College in 2005 and pursued a Diploma in Business Management, Sales and Marketing, graduating in 2007.

    After his return to Kenya in 1969, Macharia worked as a provincial local government finance officer in the Ministry of Local Government.     Why court ordered SK Macharia to return funds

    Justice Alfred Mabeya declared the withdrawal of funds as illegal and unlawful as it was intended to cripple the firm financially.

    Business Daily reported that the judge ordered Macharia to return the money to the account it was taken from.

    "This is in order to meet the ends of justice and to secure the interest of the policyholders of the plaintiff and the claimants for compensation," Mabeya ruled.

    According to Tech Cabal, the money was transferred from Directline's Diamond Trust Bank account to Toy and Suna Holdings Ltd on May 16.

    The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) noted the transaction was a scam meant to defraud the company's beneficiaries and policyholders.

    On Monday, June 10, SK Macharia announced that he had ceased the operations of Directline Assurance Company.

    Macharia, who chairs Royal Credit Limited, which owns the insurer, said all employee contracts had been terminated.

    The tycoon announced that the company's board of directors would dissolve immediately and Royal Credit Limited would acquire all of Directline's assets.
